		<description>FRINGE FESTIVAL REVIEW:

&quot;THE DECIDERS&quot;

Tuesday, August 19, 2008: The opening of “The Deciders,” at The New York International Fringe Show was a Wikipedia moment when a real-life character met the actress who plays her on stage.

 In the audience was Cindy Sheehan who is also a featured character in the play. Cindy’s son, Casey, was killed in the war in 2004, and Cindy began a long wait in Crawford, Texas, to met with Bush to ask him why.

“A Nation Rocked to Sleep” is the anthem of the show, with lyrics written by her daughter, Carly Sheehan. Amber Carson who sings it in the show has all the verve of Janis Joplin, delivering the song with the fervor that recalls earlier anti-war anthems in the Vietnam era.

The rock musical satire takes its title from Bush’s statement in April 18, 2006 “...I am the decider, and I decide what is best.”

Dubya (played by Erik Hogan) of course is the star of the show, which features Condoleezza Rice (Carla Euphrates Kelly) and Dick Cheney (John Stillwaggon) in a plot that revolves about returning Saddamn (Paul Sadik) to power to stabilize Iraq. America wants the oil, but the catch is Saddamn wants his show produced on Broadway in exchange. Observers --- an Iraqi woman Riverbend (Dana Iannuzzi) and a Fox News caster Don Smiley (Dustin Cross) --keep the plot moving to the pace of the rousing music.

For those who wonder what is fact and what is fiction, Newsweek reported that the Iraqi National Theater was turning Saddam’s novel “Zabibah and the King” into a musical at the time of the U. S. led invasion.

When “Saddamn the Musical” closes after a week, (hey, that’s Broadway), Saddamn wants no part in the deal.

“The Deciders” only plays a week at the NY International Fringe. But worry...the real story is never-ending in the Washington-Baghdad corridor.

Kudos to composer/writer Mitch Kess, director J. Michaels and music director David Fletcher and the cast and creative team who collaborated on this dynamic pertinent show. Unlike bi-partisan multi-national interests, everyone in this show works together. In one hour, they managed to weave several story lines/musical themes into a gripping memorable show.

In the end, the standing ovations say that it is the audience (the voters) who are the true “Deciders.”
